When a Size 20–22 Body Meets a 38GG Chest: You're Not the Exception, You're the Rule
If you've ever stood in a fitting room holding a swimsuit that fits your hips perfectly but gapes at the bust — or cups your chest beautifully but rolls down your torso — you already know that standard sizing wasn't designed for you. And you're far from alone.
Shopping swimwear when your clothing size (20–22) and your bra size (38GG or similar) live in different sizing universes is one of the most common challenges in plus-size fashion. This guide gives you the practical tools to shop smarter: measurements to take before you buy, what to look for in a top, how to use sister sizing to your advantage, and a checklist to run through for any swimsuit before adding it to your cart.
Step 1: Take These Four Measurements First
Generic size charts are built on proportional averages that don't account for full-bust bodies. Taking your own measurements takes three minutes and saves hours of returns.
- Bust (fullest point): Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, parallel to the floor. For a 38GG this will likely be 48–52", depending on your frame.
- Underbust / band: Measure directly under your chest, snug but not tight. This gives you your bra band number (38 in this case) and helps you judge whether a swimsuit's built-in support matches your actual support needs.
- Waist: Measure at the narrowest point, usually 1–2" above the navel.
- Torso length: Measure from the top of one shoulder, down through the crotch, and back up to the same shoulder. A typical torso is 55–58"; many plus-size women with a longer rise or fuller seat run 60–68". Knowing this tells you immediately whether a one-piece will pull, bunch, or fit.
Write these four numbers down. Keep them in your phone. You'll use them every time you shop.
Step 2: Understand Torso Length — The Fit Factor Nobody Talks About
Torso length is the single biggest reason plus-size one-pieces fail. A suit cut for a 55" torso on a 63" torso will:
- Pull the shoulder straps down so they can't carry weight properly
- Create a wedge effect at the seat
- Make the built-in bra sit below the fullest bust point, providing zero lift
What to look for: Adjustable straps (at minimum 2–3" of range), halter ties, or crossback designs all give you more torso flexibility. Our European Style One-Piece Swimsuit and Contrast Trim Halter One-Piece both feature adjustable strap systems that allow you to dial in the torso length.
Step 3: Bust Support in Swimwear — What Actually Works for a GG Cup
Most swimwear is designed for a B or C cup. For a GG cup, the underwire, cup structure, and strap placement all need to work much harder. Here's what to look for:
- Underwire: Soft foam padding alone won't provide enough lift or projection at a GG cup. Look for styles with boned cups, structured underwire, or rigid cup seaming.
- Wide straps: Straps under ¾" wide will dig and shift. Halter styles that tie at the neck distribute weight across the upper back — much better for fuller busts.
- Full cup vs. demi cup: Demi and triangle cuts will not contain a GG cup. Look for full-cup wiring or at minimum a bandeau with boning and a wide underbust band.
- Clasp or tie closure: A back clasp gives you a more customised fit than a fixed strap. Halter ties let you adjust tension as needed throughout the day.
- Power mesh lining: Swimsuits with a power mesh lining inside the cup area provide structure without bulk and hold the cup in place in water.
For extra bust support in a bikini format, our Push-Up Bikini Set and Letter Print Push-Up Bikini Set feature push-up cup construction and adjustable straps designed to give lift.
Step 4: Size Your Top and Bottom Separately
For a size 20–22 body with a 38GG bust, buying a one-size bikini set will almost always result in a mismatch. The fix is to buy separates and size each piece to its own measurement.
- Top: Size to your bust measurement and underbust band
- Bottom: Size to your hip measurement at the fullest point
Our Split Swimsuit Plus Size is designed specifically with plus proportions in mind, and our 3-Piece Mesh Swimsuit Set includes separates you can size independently, plus a cover-up layer for added versatility.
Step 5: Use Sister Sizing to Expand Your Options
Sister sizing is a bra-industry trick that works equally well in swimwear. When you go up one band size, drop one cup letter — the actual cup volume stays the same.
| Your size | Sister size up (band) | Sister size down (band) |
|---|---|---|
| 38GG | 40G | 36H |
| 38G | 40FF | 36GG |
| 40FF | 42F | 38G |
If a swimsuit top fits perfectly in the cup but the band is too loose, try the sister size down (36H instead of 38GG). If the band is tight but the cup fits well, try the sister size up (40G).
Step 6: Choose Coverage Intentionally
Coverage isn't about hiding — it's about what makes you feel comfortable and confident in the water.
- Bust coverage: Full-cup and halter tops with underwire or boning give the most structure. Our Contrast Trim Halter One-Piece is a great starting point.
- Arm and torso coverage: Our Long Sleeve Split Bikini Set offers arm coverage and chest cushioning — ideal for sun protection and all-day comfort.
- Beach-to-social: Our Embroidered Beach Cover-Up Dress layers beautifully over any swimsuit.
Your Pre-Purchase Checklist
- ☐ Does the size chart include bust, waist, and hip measurements (not just S/M/L/XL)?
- ☐ Is the torso length listed, or is there a "long torso" option?
- ☐ Does the top have adjustable straps, halter ties, or a back clasp?
- ☐ Is there underwire, boning, or a structured cup — not just foam padding?
- ☐ Can you size the top and bottom separately?
- ☐ Is the return policy clear, in case the torso length doesn't work for your frame?
